The selection of horses by acquisition, with the purpose of using them as police horses is a complex task. Good temperament and high stature are essential characteristics for a military police horse. In this study, the models of purchasing horses or breeding were compared, analyzing each model and its consequences for PMSC. The needs of the PMSC determined the characteristics desired for military police horses as the base for comparing the two models (purchase versus breeding horses) for military police use at PMSC. The two models were also compared for viability and effectiveness. The methodology used bibliographic and documentary sources. The purchase model was widely used until 2013 and breeding started in 2014. The costs of breeding were compatible with the desired standard for police horses and the benefits in temperament and morphology exceed those of acquisition by purchase. This study can be used to assist other military police in Brazil, deciding to breeding horses for their own use
