Abstract

Maintaining the planet's ability to satisfy all human demands has fostered the interest of scholars in creating alternatives for conservation and preservation of the environment. Reggarding the legal aspect Brazil advanced with the approval of the Environmental Crimes Law (Federal Law nº 9.605/12/2/1998), considered as a great instrument for the conservation of environmental quality. The Environmental Crimes Law brings deterrence to environmental offenses and crimes. This study aimed to analyze the environmental crimes that occurred in Corumbá (MS), between 2005 and 2010, with the objective of verifying the effectiveness of the Law in this municipality, following the whole process of the registered crimes until the possible trial. A total of 116 environmental crimes were recorded and it was concluded that law enforcement has not been effective in minimizing environmental crimes.
